The Custom Engagement Ring Process: A Step-by-Step Guide | Sakaris Jewelers Naples FL
Engagement Rings — Sakaris Jewelers Naples, Florida 12 minute read · By Peter Sakaris, Sakaris JewelersMost people have never designed a piece of jewelry before. They come to us with a feeling, maybe a reference image, maybe just a word or two, and they wonder if that is enough to start. It always is. The custom engagement ring process is not complicated when you have the right guide. This is exactly how it works at Sakaris Jewelers, from the first conversation to the moment you open the box.

Why Choose a Custom Engagement Ring Over Off-the-Shelf
When you walk into a traditional jewelry store, every ring in the case was made for no one in particular. It was manufactured in bulk, shipped to a warehouse, marked up through a retail chain, and placed under glass to wait for someone who might be close enough to the standard size and style to say yes.
A custom engagement ring is the opposite of that. It is designed specifically for the person who will wear it every day for the rest of their life. Her style. Her proportions. The way she carries herself. The things she gravitates toward without knowing why. A custom ring captures all of that in a way a pre-made ring never can.
At Sakaris Jewelers, we are not a jewelry store. We are a private, appointment-only jewelry design studio in Naples, Florida. When you work with us, you work directly with Peter, the jeweler and manufacturer. No middleman. No commissioned salesperson. No inventory we are trying to move. Just an honest conversation and the expertise to build exactly what you envision.
The price reality: Because we operate as the manufacturer without retail overhead, most clients find that a custom ring costs the same or less than a comparable pre-made ring from a traditional store. You are paying for the piece itself, not for the showroom, the staff, or the brand name above the door.
The Seven-Step Custom Engagement Ring Process
Here is exactly what happens from the moment you reach out to the moment the ring is on her finger.
From CAD rendering to finished ring. Every detail is approved before a single tool is lifted.
The Discovery Consultation
Everything begins with a private conversation. In person at our Naples studio or over video call from anywhere in the world. We ask you about her style, her lifestyle, your budget, your timeline, and the story behind the ring. You do not need to know what you want yet. Most clients do not. That is what this conversation is for.
There is no charge for the consultation and no pressure to move forward. We want to earn your trust before you spend a single dollar.
Diamond Education
Before we talk about design, we talk about the diamond. This is where most people feel lost and where honest guidance matters most. We walk you through the 4 Cs, the difference between natural and lab grown diamonds, certification standards, and what actually makes a diamond look exceptional versus what just looks good on paper.
We have no inventory to push you toward. We present both options honestly and help you decide what is right for your specific priorities and budget.
Curated Diamond Sourcing
Once we understand what you are looking for, we source diamonds that match your criteria. For natural diamonds we use GIA-certified stones. For lab grown diamonds we use IGI-certified stones. In both cases we personally review every stone we present, not just for what the certificate says but for how the diamond actually performs in light.
Two diamonds can share an identical certificate and look completely different in person. We source the one that looks extraordinary.
Design Direction
With the diamond selected, we turn our full attention to the setting. We look at reference images together, discuss silhouette, prong style, band profile, metal type, and every detail that affects how the finished ring will look and feel. We define a clear design direction that both of you feel genuinely excited about.
CAD Renderings and Revisions
We produce a detailed three-dimensional CAD rendering of your ring and share it with you for review. You will see exactly what the finished piece will look like from every angle before any metal is cast. If anything needs adjusting, we revise the rendering until you are completely satisfied. Nothing goes into production until you give full approval.
This step protects you entirely. Changes at the CAD stage cost nothing. Changes after production begins are significantly more difficult.
Production
With your approval confirmed, master craftsmen bring your design to life using the finest materials and advanced manufacturing techniques. Production typically takes two to four weeks. We keep you updated throughout and reach out immediately if anything requires your attention.
Delivery
For local clients in Naples and Southwest Florida, you can collect the finished ring in person at our private studio. For remote clients, we ship fully insured via FedEx to your nearest FedEx location for secure pickup with a valid government-issued ID. Every package is insured for the complete declared value of the piece.
One complimentary resize is included on eligible rings in case any adjustment is needed after delivery.

Book Your Free ConsultationChoosing Your Diamond
The diamond accounts for the majority of the cost in most engagement rings, and it is the decision that most people feel least prepared to make. Here is what you actually need to know.
We present diamond options side by side so you can see exactly what you are choosing between.
Natural vs Lab Grown Diamonds
This is the first decision most clients make, and it is one of the most consequential. Natural diamonds are formed over billions of years beneath the Earth and carry inherent rarity. Lab grown diamonds are chemically and physically identical but created in a controlled environment, and they typically cost 60 to 80 percent less than comparable natural stones.
Neither is the wrong choice. The right choice depends on what matters most to you. We walk every client through both options honestly with no agenda in either direction.

The 4 Cs: What Actually Matters
Cut is the most important factor by a significant margin. A beautifully cut diamond reflects light in a way that makes it appear alive. A poorly cut diamond of excellent color and clarity will still look dull. We always prioritize cut above everything else.
After cut, we focus on color and then clarity. For natural diamonds we recommend G to H color and VS1 to VS2 clarity, the sweet spot where quality is genuinely excellent without paying a premium for characteristics invisible to the naked eye. For lab grown diamonds, we recommend D through F color and VVS clarity.
Carat weight is last. A slightly smaller diamond with a better cut will almost always look more impressive than a larger stone with poor light performance.
Diamond Shapes for Engagement Rings
The shape of the diamond is one of the most personal decisions in the entire process. Here are the most popular choices and what makes each one distinctive.
Different shapes suit different personalities. We help you find the one that feels most like her.
- Round brilliant — Timeless, maximum sparkle, universally flattering. The most popular choice for generations.
- Oval — The most requested shape right now. Elongates the finger beautifully and appears larger than its carat weight suggests.
- Emerald cut — Sophisticated and architectural. A hall-of-mirrors effect rather than sparkle. For clients with a refined, modern aesthetic.
- Pear — Romantic and elongating. A distinctive choice that photographs exceptionally well.
- Cushion — Soft, romantic, and warm. A vintage sensibility that pairs beautifully with yellow gold.
- Radiant — The best of round and emerald. Maximum brilliance in a rectangular silhouette.
- Marquise — Dramatic and bold. The most elongating shape available.
"There is no objectively best diamond shape. There is only the one that feels most like the person who will wear it every day. That is always where we start the conversation."

Metals and Settings
The same design in four different metals. The metal choice dramatically affects the overall feel of the ring.
Choosing the Right Metal
Platinum is the most prestigious choice. Naturally white, extremely durable, and hypoallergenic. It develops a soft patina over time that many clients consider part of its character. The heaviest and most expensive metal option.
18k white gold offers a similar look to platinum at a lower price point. It requires rhodium plating every few years to maintain its white appearance, but for most clients this is a minor consideration.
18k yellow gold has had a significant resurgence and pairs beautifully with warmer diamond color grades. Timeless and classic, with a warmth that white metals cannot replicate.
18k rose gold is romantic and distinctive. It pairs particularly well with oval and pear shaped diamonds and creates a soft, feminine overall look.
Setting Styles
The setting is the architecture of the ring. It determines how the diamond sits, how much light it receives, and how it looks alongside a future wedding band.
- Solitaire — Nothing competes with the diamond. Clean, timeless, and endlessly elegant.
- Hidden halo — A halo of small diamonds tucked beneath the center stone, adding brilliance without the visual bulk of a traditional halo.
- Pave band — Diamonds set along the band for continuous sparkle from every direction.
- Three stone — Past, present, and future. Rich in symbolism and visually striking.
- Bezel — The diamond is encircled in metal rather than held by prongs. Sleek, modern, and exceptionally secure for active lifestyles.
- East-west — The diamond sits horizontally rather than vertically. A modern, architectural choice.
Planning tip: We always design the engagement ring with the wedding band in mind. Whether that means a contoured shadow band, a matching eternity band, or a simple straight band, we make sure both pieces work together beautifully from the very beginning.

Common Mistakes to Avoid When Designing an Engagement Ring
- › Not planning for the wedding band. The engagement ring and wedding band need to work together. If you design the engagement ring without considering the band, you may end up with a combination that does not sit flush or look intentional. We plan for both from the start.
- › Prioritizing carat weight over cut quality. A larger diamond with a poor cut will look duller than a smaller diamond with an excellent cut. Cut is the most important factor in how a diamond looks on her hand every day.
- › Choosing a setting based on looks alone without considering lifestyle. An intricate pave setting is stunning but requires more maintenance than a clean solitaire. We discuss her daily life during the consultation and help you choose a design that is as practical as it is beautiful.
- › Working with a salesperson instead of a jeweler. A salesperson shows you what is in the case. A jeweler builds what you actually want. These are fundamentally different experiences.
- › Starting too late. The custom process takes four to six weeks from deposit to delivery. If you have a specific proposal date, start at least eight weeks in advance to allow time for design, revisions, and production without pressure.
Every consultation is private, unhurried, and built entirely around you.
Real Client Stories
The best way to understand what the custom process feels like is to hear from the people who have been through it.
"I had no idea where to start. I knew I wanted something special but that was it. Peter walked me through everything with zero pressure, helped me understand diamonds in a way that actually made sense, and the ring he built was beyond anything I imagined. She cried when she saw it."
Ryan M. — Naples, FL
"I did the entire process remotely over FaceTime. I was skeptical at first but every step was seamless. They sent a sizing kit, walked me through diamond options on video, and the ring arrived better than I pictured it. My fiancee had no idea and the proposal was perfect."
Marcus B. — Remote Client, Atlanta, GA
Frequently Asked Questions
How long does the custom engagement ring process take?
From first consultation to finished ring, most clients complete the process in four to six weeks. More complex designs or custom diamond sourcing can take six to eight weeks. If you have a specific proposal date, tell us at the start and we will build the timeline around it.
How involved can I be in the design process?
As involved as you want to be. Some clients come in with a precise vision and reference images. Others come with nothing more than a general feeling. Both approaches work equally well. You approve every step before we move forward, including the diamond selection and the CAD rendering.
Is designing a custom engagement ring more expensive than buying from a store?
In most cases no, and often it costs less. Because we are both the manufacturer and the client-facing studio, you are not paying for retail overhead, showroom rent, or commissioned salespeople. You pay for the piece itself. Many clients are surprised by how far their budget goes.
Can I work with Sakaris Jewelers if I am not in Naples?
Yes. We work with clients across the United States entirely remotely. We consult over video call, share CAD renderings digitally, send a professional ring sizing kit, and ship the finished ring fully insured. The experience is identical to being in our Naples studio in person.
Do you offer both natural and lab grown diamonds?
Yes. We source and offer both with no inventory bias in either direction. We educate you honestly on both options and help you choose based on your priorities, values, and budget. There is no wrong answer.
What happens if I want to change the design after seeing the CAD?
That is exactly what the CAD stage is for. We revise as many times as needed until you are completely satisfied. Nothing goes into production until you give full approval.
What is included in the free consultation?
Everything. We discuss your vision, budget, diamond preferences, metal choices, and timeline. We show you reference images and design directions. There is no charge and no obligation to move forward.
How do I figure out her ring size without ruining the surprise?
The most reliable method is to borrow a ring she already wears on the correct finger and bring it to your consultation. If that is not possible, the average women's ring size is between a 6 and 6.5. We can size slightly larger and include a complimentary resize after the proposal.
